Milkscreen: A Simple Test to Detect Alcohol in Breast Milk

I just stumbled upon a new product called Milkscreen.  It is able to detect alcohol levels found in breast milk.  It allows moms the freedom to indulge in some alcohol on special occassions without passing on the alcohol to their babies.  It is intended to help extended the time moms commit to breastfeeding.  Simply express a little breast milk onto a test strip and it will change color if alcohol is present.

Studies show infants consuming breast milk with alcohol concentrations at approximately 0.03%, and higher consumer less milk and sleep less as well as waking more frequently.  The Milkscreen test shows levels of 0.02% to let moms know if the alcohol content in their breast milk could have a negative impact on their baby.

I must confess I have not used this product myself but thought it worthwhile to inform other moms about it.  I do enjoy alcohol in moderation and continue to nurse my son.  I have never seen any negative impact on him or noticed any behavioral changes.  I hope this product helps gives moms the confidence to have some indulgance without wasting breast milk by pumping and dumping.
