Here are some things you can do before the baby is born to prepare your body for breastfeeding:

Retrain yourself to wash your breasts with warm water but without soap. Your nipples and areola secrete natural antibacterial oils that help prevent infection and cracking. Washing them with soap removes the oil and chaps and irritates the breasts increasing the risk of infection. Pat them mostly dry with a towel and leave them to air dry.

Use a baby-safe pure lanolin product on your nipples beginning a few weeks before you give birth. This prepares your nipples for nursing. Continue doing so after the baby is born and allow your nipples to air dry naturally after each feeding. Remember, lanolin tends to stain clothing until it’s dry so it is best to go topless for while after applying.

Both these suggestions help prevent sore, cracked nipples.

This is a continuation of the story of my breastfeeding journey. I broke it up into two parts because it was too long and this part has a lot of really good technical advice that would get lost at the bottom of a very long blog post. You can ready the beginning of the story here.

I went to a lactation consultant primarily for support. I knew the lactation consultant was pro-breastfeeding which I needed because my breastfeeding support network was crumbling. My mother and husband both seemed to think opting for formula was just as good as breast milk.

The lactation consultant gave me a realistic idea of how much breast milk I was producing. I was given a plan to increase my breast milk production. This plan entailed: nursing Connor for 20 minutes on each breast, then giving him as much formula as he wanted, followed by pumping breast milk for 20 minutes on each breast to stimulate my breast milk supply even further. This plan was exhausting. Start to finish it would take me about an hour and a half. I would have half an hour off before Connor wanted to nurse again. It seemed an impossible schedule to do every two hours but I was determined to stick to it.

The lactation consultant recommended taking supplements to boost my breast milk supply. Two herbal supplements recommended were: More Milk Special Blend and Goats Rue to boost my breast milk supply. Domperidone was also recommended. Domperidone is a medication I had to import from overseas because it is not FDA approved (due to licensing costs). Domperidone gave me a huge boost in breast milk supply. I acheived a 60% breast milk supply up from my initial 30%.

During this time I started using a Medela Supplemental Nursing System (SNS). An SNS is an at breast supplementer where your baby takes formula from tubes taped to your breast. This method is beneficial because the sucking action further stimulates breast milk supply. This increases your child’s time at the breast and helps to prevent nipple confusion. Through it all my little boy was a champ and seemed as committed to breastfeeding as I was.

At six months Connor started on solids and we were able to reduce the amount of formula supplement we gave him. At a year we stopped all formula completely. I was no longer using the SNS and I gave up pumping. My yield was so small anyway (only about 2oz per day when I pumped after each feed) that it didn’t seem worth it. Now the real fun began as I could simply focus on nursing Connor and we could have a breastfeeding relationship without all the added extras. I was thrilled to finally feel just like a regular mom.

Connor is now a toddler and we are still nursing. He shows no sign of letting up and I am savoring each precious moment. I have become a huge advocate of breastfeeding which is why I became involved in this website. I believe that it is due to my own struggles in the beginning that I am now more determined than ever to let Connor nurse until he’s ready to wean. I am blessed to have a little boy that loves nursing just as much as I do despite the fact that in the beginning I wasn’t able to provide for him what he needed. I am sharing my joy, sorrow and passion with you all in the hope that it will inspire you, no matter what your story, to breastfeed your babies. It has been one of the most reward parts of motherhood for me so far.

The Sacramento California based activist group Save Our Water is seeking an Urgency Ordenance from the Sacramento City council to stop Nestlé Corporation from building a bottled water plant using the city water supply.

Human rights activists and breast feeding advocates from throughout the world have boycotted the Swiss-based Nestlé Corporation since 1977 because of the millions of deaths of infants it has caused over the decades. The boycott, coordinated by groups including Baby Milk Action, International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) , Infant Feeding Action Coalition (INFACT) and Save the Children, was prompted by concern about the company’s marketing of breast milk substitutes (infant formula), particularly in less economically developed countries, which campaigners claim contributes to the unnecessary death and suffering of babies, largely among the poor.

Please take a moment to contact Kevin McCarty and Lauren Hammond and let them know that you want the urgency ordinance passed in time to apply to Nestlé. Contact Kevin McCarty at (916) 808-7006 or KMcCarty [at] cityofsacramento.org and Lauren Hammond at (916) 808-7005 or lhammond [at] cityofsacramento.org

ivda2my6h9

Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) and Senator Jeff Merkley (OR) introduced the Breastfeeding Promotion Act in both houses of Congress on 11 June. This is the first time the bill has been introduced in the Senate.
Forty-seven states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have already implemented laws protecting breastfeeding mothers, but they are neither standardized and nor inclusive. Please ask your Representative and Senators to co-sponsor the Breastfeeding Promotion Act to support a national policy to keep familes healthy.

The Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009 (H.R. 2819, S, 1244) includes five provisions:

1) Amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which protect breastfeeding women from being fired or discriminated against at work.

2) Provides tax incentives for companies that create private lactation areas in the workplace or provide breastfeeding equiptment or cunsultation services for their employees.

3) Stipulates a performance standard ensuring breastpumps are safe and effective.

4) Ensures breastfeeding equiptment and consultations are tax deductible by amending the Internal Revenue Code of the definition of medical care.

5) Protects the privacy of breastfeeding mothers ensuring they have both breaks and a private place to pump. (This applies to employers with 50 or more employees).

Breastfeeding is good for mothers, babies, and familes as a whole translating through our society. Failure to breastfeed increases the baby’s risk of infections, diarrhea, SIDS, obesity, diabetes, asthma, and childhood leukemia, and increases the mother’s risk of breast and ovarian cancers and diabetes. Breastfeeding also has significant economic and environmental benefits for families, employers, and society. Take a look at the wealth of compelling reasons to breastfeed right here at Boobiefed.

All major medical authorities recommend that babies are breastfed exclusively for their first six months and continue to breastfeed for at least the first one to two years of life. Many mothers start off breastfeeding with good intentions but lack the support they need to make it a success. Only 12% of U.S. mothers continue to exclusively breastfeeding at six months and only 21% are still breastfeeding at one year.

Currently, 77% of women breastfeed their infants at birth but breastfeeding rates drop rapidly once they return home from the hospital. More than 50% of women with infants less than one year old have returned to work. Working mothers are more likely to stop breastfeeding early if they do not receive the support they need in the workplace.
Together we can change this! Tell Congress to support the Breastfeeding Promotion Act to provide the support mothers need.

Take action at: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5162/t/6359/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=1697

The last time this act was introduced it failed to pass so let’s do everything we can to push it through this time around.

With my first child kayla, I really had a hard time getting her to breast feed and getting my milk to come in. It was a good month before we really figured it out. Had I known what I know today I would’ve taken warm showers, massaged my breasts with warm castor oil and pumped to get my milk to come for the good bacteria and the doctor finally suggested that I give her the bottle till she got strong enough to suck on my breasts, I was quite uncomfortable for that month but…when she started sucking on my breasts and got strong enough she didn’t want to be separated from me or my milk. It was a very pleasant experience and the first month is the hardest but if you really want to do it, you can do it!!
