WA Passes Legislation Supporting Breastfeeding

Add WA to the list of states who support breastfeeding! Washington state has just passed a law protecting the rights of breastfeeding mothers to feed their children in any place which is open to the public. Previously, moms could not be charged with indecent exposure, but they could be asked to leave a store, park, etc if someone asked them to. Now the law states that mothers cannot be asked to leave. I’m always excited to hear laws like these being passed, but at the same time, disappointed that in 2009 were still fighting these battles. Breasts are for feeding babies and I cannot believe we still need legislature to enforce our right to feed our children. At least legislation is starting to protect mother’s right to do the very things breasts were designer for: feeding babies.

Salma Hayek arrived in Sierra Leone in September as a UNICEF ambassador with a mission to help fight tetanus, a leading cause of death in the country for mothers and their babies. Twenty one percent of infant deaths in the country are related to tetanus. Backed by sponsorship from Pampers, she was delivering vaccines which can prevent this fatal, but completely preventable, disease. UNICEF hopes to totally eradicate tetanus worldwide by 2012.

While touring the country she chose to breastfeed a starving baby who was born on the same day as her one year old daughter. Unfortunately, most mothers in Sierra Leone stop nursing their children after just a few months as it is culturally unacceptable to continue. Their husbands believe it is wrong to have sex with a nursing mother so they feel pressured to stop. Consequently, Sierra Leone has the highest infant mortality in the world, caused predominantly by malnutrition. Much of this could be avoided if the mothers breastfed their babies. The World Health Organization recommends nursing for two years and in Sierra Leone this would literally be life saving for the children of this nation.

Hayek has a huge passion for breastfeeding and admits to finding it addictive. She chose to breastfeed the African baby to reduce the stigma on breastfeeding women and to help a hungry child that was very much in need. For Hayek, this was a very natural thing to do as her great-grandmother breastfed a stranger’s starving baby many years before in Mexico. This is a wonderful example of a modern day wet nurse in action.

Another headlining example was the Chinese police woman who breastfed eight babies who were either orphaned or whose mothers were unable to provide breast milk following the trauma of a severe earthquake that hit the Sichuan province in May 2008. Watch the video for more on her story.

Here are mothers doing everything in their power to help those in need around them and using breastfeeding as a powerful tool. We don’t all live in disaster areas but there are things we can do to make a difference. Perhaps you can talk to a pregnant friend and explain the benefits of nursing or breastfeed your baby in public so the social stigma is removed. You can show other children that nursing is important and a very natural part of motherhood and life. I believe the greatest changes happen when we take small steps to help those around us. This in turn ends up making lasting changes in our world. What can you do today to promote the importance of breastfeeding in your world?

A Chinese police woman breastfed eight babies who were either orphaned or who’s mothers were unable to provide breast milk following the trauma of a severe earthquake that hit the Sichuan province in May 2008. Although this is an older story, we thought this heroic deed still worthy of praise and your attention. Watch a mother selflessly giving to those in need.

Our children have the right to be breast fed anywhere and anytime. We, as mothers, should feel the freedom to feed them in public without the need to hurry off home which is often impractical and, especially for new moms, would have them chained to their homes for months on end.

There has been a large push to promote breastfeeding worldwide over the last few years. The Marin Breastfeeding Coalition has started a unique campaign to promote public breastfeeding. They use life-sized cardboard cut outs showing women breastfeeding their babies all over town and aims to get more acceptance for breastfeeding. The figures hold cards saying ” When breastfeeding is accepted, it won’t be noticed”. The cut outs debuted last week at the Village shopping centre in Corte Madera, California. The message is that breastfeeding in public is totally acceptable and is even protected by law in the US. They hope to spread the campaign throughout the country in the next few weeks.

The word is spreading that breastfeeding in public should be the norm. Below are videos highlighting how awful it must be for a baby to have to nurse in a restroom as this is sometimes the only dedicated place offered for mothers to breastfeed their babies. The second video is a public service announcement showing what breastfeeding in a restroom is like from the childs perspective.

Here are some tips to make it breastfeeding your child easier in public:

Stay positive and know you have every right to feed your child when they are hungry. You don’t need to apologise for that!
Find a comfortable place and create your own privacy zone. A friend can sit in front of you and you can turn away while you get the baby latched on and then turn back again. If you look up and around while your baby nurses most people will simply think he is sleeping. If you aren’t looking down at him, most people will assume he’s just sleeping. Smile at people around you and continue on with your conversations as normal.
You can wear two piece outfits or special nursing tops. This allows you to be discreet as the fabric and baby’s head cover most of the breast. While out in public bring your baby close to you first and then open your clothes so that he can latch on.
Bring a blanket to cover the baby once he is latched on and is nursing happily. You can also buy special nursing covers that are designed to help you be discreet and come in funky colors too.
Start nursing your baby before he gets too hungry by paying attention to his hunger signals. Your baby will attract more attention when he is crying.
Practice discreet breastfeeding in front of the mirror or with your partner who can give you feedback so that you’ll be prepared for when you venture out in public.
Nursing in a sling or infant carrier is great for both you and the baby. This way you can have your little one latched on and can go about your shopping at the same time.

Take the time to thank other mothers who breastfeed their babies in public. It will encourage them and help to promote breastfeeding as a normal part of our world.
