WSMV is reporting that Antioch, Tenn. is joining a new trend that’s slowly happening across the country: More and more health clinics are opening up shop in, of all places, aging malls that have few stores.

Metro Council has yet to approve the Metro Health Department’s plans to open a new women, infants and children — or WIC — clinic at Hickory Hollow Mall.

Supporters said the mall is a perfect spot since about 14,000 people in Antioch rely on the program. The program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support and healthy food vouchers for needy women and children

The Sacramento California based activist group Save Our Water is seeking an Urgency Ordenance from the Sacramento City council to stop Nestlé Corporation from building a bottled water plant using the city water supply.

Human rights activists and breast feeding advocates from throughout the world have boycotted the Swiss-based Nestlé Corporation since 1977 because of the millions of deaths of infants it has caused over the decades. The boycott, coordinated by groups including Baby Milk Action, International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) , Infant Feeding Action Coalition (INFACT) and Save the Children, was prompted by concern about the company’s marketing of breast milk substitutes (infant formula), particularly in less economically developed countries, which campaigners claim contributes to the unnecessary death and suffering of babies, largely among the poor.

Please take a moment to contact Kevin McCarty and Lauren Hammond and let them know that you want the urgency ordinance passed in time to apply to Nestlé. Contact Kevin McCarty at (916) 808-7006 or KMcCarty [at] cityofsacramento.org and Lauren Hammond at (916) 808-7005 or lhammond [at] cityofsacramento.org

As parents were have all recently been nervous about the H1N1 (swine) flu outbreaks, how it will affect our children and wondering how to protect them. The United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) “recommends breastfeeding as a critical strategy to prevent infection.” The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offeres guidance specifically for pregnant and breastfeeding women which states that “infants who are not breastfeeding are particularly vulnerable to infection and hospitalization for severe respiratory illness. Women who deliver should be encouraged to initiate breastfeeding early and feed frequently.”

USBC Chair Joan Younger Meek, MD, MS, RD, FAAP, FABM, IBCLC, says “research clearly shows that breastfeeding provides a safe, reliable food source, full of disease-fighting cells and antibodies that help protect infants from germs and illnesses. Mothers exposed to influenza produce specific protection for their infants and transmit this through their breast milk. Infant formula does not provide these specific infection fighting properties. Unnecessary formula supplementation should be eliminated so the infant can receive as much benefit as possible from maternal protective antibodies and other immune protective factors.” This re-enforces the importance of breastfeeding specifically in emergency situations.

Women can breastfeed while receiving antiviral medications. The CDC recommends a sick woman should continue breastfeeding and increase the frequency of feedings. If either mother or infant is too ill to breastfeed directly at the breast, the mother should pump breast milk for her baby instead. If this is not possible, you may be able to get donated breast milk from the Human Milk Banking Associtaion of North America.

According to the CDC, the risk of transmission of H1N1 (swine) flu through breast milk is unknown. It is, however, rare that seasonal flu is transmitted through breast milk. Also, once the mother shows symptoms of flu, her infant has frequently already been exposed. Breast milk can in fact give additional protection to your baby from the flu.

To protect against the transmission of H1N1 (swine) flu breastfeed your children and ensure all parents and caregivers do the following to prevent spreading germs:

Wash both adults and children’s hands with soap and water, especially if placed in the mouth

Infants and mothers should enjoy lots of skin-to-skin contact

Don’t share toys that have been in infant’s mouths. Wash them with soap and water if placed in the mouth.

Don’t share pacifiers or let adults put them in their mouths (including the pacifier ring/handle)

Cover nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing

Breastfeeding boosts a child’s immune system and helps fight infection. This is a good idea at all times but even more so since the H1N1 (swine) flu outbreak. I’m glad to see yet another great reason why we should continue to keep our children boobiefed.

Georgia Browne, a nursing mother, breastfeed her child but also pumps additional breast milk for her father which he adds to his daily cornflakes. Her father got terminal colon cancer a few years ago, and once she had her first child, she began expressing milk to help her father fight the cancer. She feeds her baby first and her dad gets any extra milk she produces, so she is not taking food away from her baby in order to give her father this treatment. I think its fantastic that the benefits of breast milk extend beyond the realms of babies and can help everyone.

Add WA to the list of states who support breastfeeding! Washington state has just passed a law protecting the rights of breastfeeding mothers to feed their children in any place which is open to the public. Previously, moms could not be charged with indecent exposure, but they could be asked to leave a store, park, etc if someone asked them to. Now the law states that mothers cannot be asked to leave. I’m always excited to hear laws like these being passed, but at the same time, disappointed that in 2009 were still fighting these battles. Breasts are for feeding babies and I cannot believe we still need legislature to enforce our right to feed our children. At least legislation is starting to protect mother’s right to do the very things breasts were designer for: feeding babies.

The May issue of “Obstetrics and Gynecology” magazine has published a study that included over 130,000 women and the long-term health benefits to their cardiovascular and pulmonary health. According to the study: “While breastfeeding for at least a month cuts the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, nursing for more than one year lowers the risk of developing cardiovascular events by 10 percent. “ Even just one month of breastfeeding your child can benefit your health and evidence shows that the longer you breastfeed, the more health benefits you will reap. That’s pretty exciting!

This study is great news to those who have breastfed and an inspiration to moms who have not made up their minds yet, or who may be having a hard time maintaining a breastfeeding relationship. Its absolutely worth it for both you and your child.

The article below bears exciting news about breastfeeding benefits to the nursing mom. Many of us know that “breast is best” for baby, but this study indicates a correlation between nursing and many added benefits for moms as well. It iss a long running observational study conducted by a reputable institution. The study shows that women who breastfeed can lower their risk of heart disease, type-2 diabetes, postpartum depression and will see their metabolism normalize sooner after birth than mothers who do not breastfeed. I’m a firm believer in the thought that what created us makes no waste, so its nice to hear that breastfeeding is more than just a source of “free food” for baby and is so beneficial to mammas as well.
